Summerset Trail

Built on the old Rock Island Railway line spur connecting the communities of Carlisle to Indianola, this 11-mile trail traverses 3 distinct Iowa ecosystems. As the trail travels along the Middle River, you will pass through prairies, woodlands, and wetlands while enjoying peaceful nothingness.

The Summerset Trail has three trailheads:

Carlisle Trailhead

The Carlisle trailhead is located at 100 Summerset Trail, right off of Hwy 5. There is parking, bathrooms, and sheltered picnic areas at the trailhead, as well as a Casey’s and Carlisle’s Fiss’ Ice-cream nearby.

Banner Lakes Trailhead

Located at the Summerset State Park off Hwy 65/69 with parking, restrooms, and a loop around the Banner Lakes. As you enter the park you will find a wildlife watching stand constructed by Carlisle’s Eagle Scouts. The trail runs along the east side of Summerset State Park and crosses the Middle River on the way to the southern half of the trail towards Indianola.

Indianola Trailhead

The Indianola trailhead sits on the 300 block of E 5th street and provides parking, restrooms, and sheltered picnic areas. This trailhead is also a junction into the 1.6-mile long McVay Trail.
